Biological Sciences for UCB Minority Students

The 2012 UCB Genentech Foundation Biological Sciences Minority Summer Research Program aims to increase the number of UCB minority students who are interested in pursuing research careers in the biological sciences. This research intensive summer program enhances participants' research skills, and increases their competitiveness as candidates for admission to prestigious graduate and professional institutions. In addition, this program exposes participants to the diversity of research offered at UC Berkeley and encourages an interdisciplinary approach in advancing science. Participants are encouraged to pursue a doctoral degree and research careers in the biological sciences and biotechnology.
Eligibility
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- UC Berkeley minority undergraduates (African Americans, Native Americans, Pacific Islander, Puerto Ricans, Mexican/Latino/Chicano Americans, and Filipino Americans)
- Sophomores ( 3 semesters of college experience), juniors, and non-graduating seniors who are returning in the fall to continue their undergraduate studies (Freshmen are ineligible)
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Interest in research and the pursuit of a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.
- Prior research experience preferred

- Housing & meal plan provided, all participants are required to live in designated campus housing.

Requirements
As a 2011 UC Berkeley Genentech Scholar participant, you will be required to:
- Commit to full-time direct participation on a research project
- Attend weekly seminars and/or workshops
- Meet regularly with the graduate student assistant for the program
- Submit preliminary and final abstracts
- Present research findings in poster and oral presentations
- Complete evaluation before, during, and after program
